Air Force Reserve Major Bill Jacobus

DOB: 30 October 1967
Current residence: Albuquerque, NM
Hometown: Evergreen, CO
Cycling strengths: Lead-outs, sprints, and long breakaways
Current job: Air Force Reserve F-16 Pilot

Why did you join the military? I joined the military because I knew I wanted to do something involved with aviation, fly if possible. Luckily for me, the Air Force Academy is only about one hour south of my hometown so I knew about the programs there.

Previous sports: Previous sports include football and rugby at the Air Force Academy where we won back-to-back National Collegiate Rugby Championships. I had a late return to competitive athletics as my 20’s were spent “flying, fighting, and winning” in the F-16 for three consecutive overseas tours.

How did you get started in cycling? I got started in cycling through mountain biking and triathlon while stationed at Hill AFB in Utah.

Most memorable experience in cycling: My most memorable race in cycling has to be the 2007 Iron Horse Criterium in Durango Colorado where I finished second to Chris Wherry and ahead of a strong field containing several professional riders in a 46 mph sprint.

Most memorable experience in the military: My most memorable experience in the military was flying (and skiing and kayaking) as an Exchange Officer for two years with the Norwegian Air Force.
