Gallagher Leads the Armed Forces Team with an Eighth Place Finish in Mackenbach
17 July 2006
Michael Gallagher launched himself into an early break that stayed in front of the main peloton for the remainder of the 72-lap "1.Mackenbacher Abendkriterium" Criterium Race in Mackenbach. Gallagher was also able to place 3rd in the "superprime" competition.
This race was incredibly fast on a 1km, around-the-block course that narrowed to one lane coming off the second corner. An uphill grade after turn three added a challenge on such a short course. Remaining members of the Armed Forces Team were active throughout the race controlling the main peloton and chasing down breakaways. All Armed Forces Team members finished in the top twenty:
8th - Michael Gallagher
12th - George Ganoung
14th - Steve Mlujeak
16th - Ian Holt
17th - Andy Shaw
18th - Shawn Olin
19th - Eric Obergfell
The U.S. Armed Forces Cycling Team competed in three weekend events in preparation for the Military World Cycling Championships (CISM) to be held in The Netherlands, 22-28 July.
