Ride of Silence, 17 May
Cyclists everywhere are encouraged to participate in a "Ride of Silence" on 17 May, to honor those who have been injured or killed, to raise awareness that we are here and to ask that we all share the road. There are more than 200 organized rides in the U.S. and several in other countries as well. Find information for your area at www.rideofsilence.org
For cyclists in the Charleston, South Carolina area, please make every effort to attend in honor of Armed Forces Cyclist, Navy LTJG Garrett Wonders, who was hit by a truck and killed while training on March 10, 2004. The Charleston event will start at 6pm with a dedication ceremony of "Wonders Way," the bike and pedestrian lane on the Arthur Ravenel Bridge. Meet on the Mount Pleasant side of the bridge. Following the dedication, around 6:30pm, cyclists will participate in the Ride of Silence, a ride that will go from the ceremony, over the bridge, down East Bay Street to the Battery, up Ashley Avenue, ending at Hampton Park. The ride is supposed to average 12 miles mph. Those who know someone who has been killed will wear black armbands, while those who have been hit will wear red armbands.
